- Air Freight Volume Calculator From China
If you plan to ship your products by air, you must understand how chargeable weight is calculated. This is extremely important because it directly affects your shipping cost.
Many customers who are new to air freight do not understand the difference between net weight and gross weight, and this can lead to unexpected charges.
These two terms can literally save your business.

What Is Net Weight?
Net weight is the actual weight of the product itself, without any packaging of any kind.
Example:
A power bank that weighs 300 grams is the net weight.
What Is Gross Weight?
Gross weight is the product weight plus everything included in its packaging. This includes:
- Inner box
- Plastic wrap
- Outer carton
- Any other material used to pack the item
Example:
A power bank that weighs 300 grams might reach around 420 grams after adding its box, plastic, and master carton.
That total is the gross weight.
In air freight, the chargeable weight is always the higher value between gross weight and volumetric weight
Booking air freight just a few days earlier can make a big difference in both price and transit time, especially during peak seasons when space becomes limited.
💡 PRO TIP
- Volumetric Weight in Air Freight
Volumetric weight is the biggest surprise for many shippers. It applies when a shipment is large in size but light in actual weight.
Example
You ship a pillow from China to the USA.
The pillow weighs only 2 kg, but the company charges you for 10 kg.
Why?
Because the volumetric weight is higher than the actual weight.
How to Calculate Volumetric Weight
To calculate volumetric weight for air freight, use this formula:
Volumetric Weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6000
Example Calculation for a Pillow
Carton dimensions:
- Length 50 cm
- Width 40 cm
- Height 30 cm
Step by step:
- Multiply the dimensions
50 × 40 × 30 = 60000 - Divide by 6000
60000 ÷ 6000 = 10 kg
Final Result
- Net Weight: 2 kg
- Volumetric Weight: 10 kg
- Chargeable Weight: 10 kg
Since 10 kg is higher, the airline will charge based on the volumetric weight.
